Penny Barker - Trustee
Penny graduated from the Royal Veterinary College and started in mixed practice before returning to the Royal Veterinary College to complete an internship in Small Animal Emergency Medicine and Critical Care. She worked in various small animal practices and then took some time away from the profession working in project and programme management within the Health Sector and then as a management consultant for Ernst and Young. She returned to the veterinary profession in 2012 and now works in a busy small animal practice in Berkshire.
A keen cyclist, in 2014, Penny started a journey towards the Race Across America, a 3000 mile non-stop bicycle race from Oceanside, San Diego to Annapolis in Maryland with a 12 day cut off time. She plans to complete RAAM in 2017. She is raising money as part of her “Going the Extra Mile…” campaign for Hounds for Heroes and the British Heart Foundation.
Penny joined Hounds for Heroes as a Trustee in January 2016, hoping to use both her veterinary and project management experience to support the charity alongside her fundraising activities. She spent 6 years in the Officer Training Corps and working with both the Territorial and Regular Army and encounters assistance dogs regularly in a veterinary capacity. This gives her a unique insight into the special niche that Hounds for Heroes is working to fill and some of the challenges it faces.
