Our application process is open to all HM Armed Forces and Emergency Services personnel, both serving or previously served, who have become physically disabled through illness or injury either service or non-service attributable. Our dogs help individuals regain independence, assist with daily tasks, and offer companionship. 

Please note we are unable to accept applications from those whose primary reason for applying relates to mental and emotional disabilities, for example PTSD.

Eligibility Criteria:
To apply for an assistance dog, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Service Background: Must have served or be currently serving in HM Armed Forces (regular or reservist), or 999 emergency services.

Age: Applicants must be over 16 years old.

Location: Must reside full-time in the UK excluding the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey due to aftercare limitations.

Physical Disability: Must have a confirmed physical disability or medical condition requiring assistance with at least three distinct tasks, such as:

-Picking up dropped items
-Opening/closing doors
-Dressing/undressing assistance
-Fetching help

Home Environment: Must have a suitable home for an assistance dog, with the ability to care for it.

Care Needs: Must be able to meet the physical and welfare needs of an assistance dog.

Conditions Supported:
We primarily assist individuals with physical mobility challenges. Some conditions include:

-Amputations
-Arthritis
-Chronic back/neck issues
-Degenerative diseases (e.g., MS, Parkinson’s)
-Spinal cord injuries
-Ehler Danlos Syndrome
-Acquired Brain Injury

Costs: Hounds for Heroes can cover the full cost of the dog's care, including food, training and vets bills. Financial contributions from partners are appreciated but not required.

Dog Training: Our dogs are trained to assist with tasks such as picking up objects, opening doors and fetching help. They can also respond to non-verbal commands and can e trained for specific tasks tailored to the individuals needs. In emergencies they can activate call systems or bring items like a blanket or phone.
